Big Horn Sheep Colorado
Another iconic symbol of Colorado and the Poster Child of the Colorado Parks and Wildlife is the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep.

Designated the State Animal of Colorado in 1961, the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep can often be seen along high elevation highways and Colorado Mountain Passes. In fact, it is very common to find Big Horn Sheep near Eisenhower Tunnel – The Highest Motor Vehicle Tunnel in the World (11,158 feet).

About The Rocky Mountian Big Horn Sheep

The Bighorn Sheep, “Ovis Canadensis”, is only found in the Rocky Mountains of North America and is most frequently seen at elevations over 11,000 feet. The Big Horn Sheep is a fairly non-aggressive mammal but male rams will still defend the herd if provoked. Male Rams can grow up to 300 lbs and their horns can weigh over 30 lbs.

The Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep is not on the endangered species list or protected in the State of Colorado.
