STATE ROCK OF COLORADO - YULE MARBLE
One of the most iconic symbols of the United State comes from Yule Creek Valley in Marble, Colorado. This white marble is only found in the Elk Mountains of Colorado at over 7,990 ft in elevation.
If you have ever been to Washington D.C. then you have probably seen the White Marble National Monuments erected from the only White Yule Marble Quarry in the World.
Because of its rarity and unique purity, Yule Marble was used in constructing and memorialize American Monuments including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This White “Metamorphosed Limestone” can also be found decorating the floor of the Colorado State Capitol Building and walkways of the U.S. Air Force Academy. As a result of its extremely limited supply and geographic location, Yule Marble is incredibly expensive and primarily reserved for government buildings and statues. In fact, it is illegal to even pick up small fragments of the white stone found along the banks of Yule Creek. “State Rock.” State Rock | Archives. “State Rock.” Colorado Geological Survey, 10 Nov. 2016.Where is Yule Marble Found in Colorado
